The Lady Lions
basketball team opened their 2012-2013 season with 4 straight road games and
now they finally got to play in front of their home fans. They welcomed NAIA opponent
Dakota State University Lady Trojans to Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse.
The Lady Lions came out fast in the opening minutes of
the game taking an early lead over the Lady Trojans 9 to 6, but after that the
Lady Trojans defense tightened its grips on the Lady Lions. The Lady Trojans
would hold the Lady Lions to just 6 for 32 (18.8 percent) from the field and
they would go 14 for 29 (48.9 percent) themselves. Both teams had 12 turnovers at the half, while
the Lady Lions grabbed 8 offensive boards. The Lady Trojans took a 36 to 15
lead into halftime.
The Lady Lions offense finally got back on track in the
second half scoring 31 points in the second frame. They shot 12 for 28 (42.9
percent) from the field and 5 for 9 (55.6 percent) on 3 pointers. The Lady
Lions also caused 8 more Lady Trojan turnovers. The Lady Trojans offense
continue to score in the second half scoring 48 more points on 62.5 percent of
their field goals (15 for 24). They also made 10 of their 12 (83.3 percent)
free throw attempts in the second half. The Lady Trojans went on to win 84 to
46 over the Lady Lions.
In the loss the Lady Lions were led by freshman guard
Aaren LaRose (Holbrook, AZ) who had 13 points on 5 of 13 from the field and 3
of 8 behind the arc. Treva Nutter (Thedford, NE) added 12 points, while Shianne
Montgomery (Charlo, MT) had 10 points of her own. The Lady Lions grabbed 12 offensive
boards, 10 steals and caused 20 Lady Trojan turnovers in the game.
The loss drops the Lady Lions to 3-2 on the season with 2
more games this weekend still to play. The lady Lions head to NDSCS in
Wahpeton, ND for the Baymont Inn Classic. The Lady Lions face Dakota College at
Bottineau at 2pm on Saturday, November 17th and they play North
Dakota State College of the Sciences at 4pm on Sunday November 18th,
