The Lady Lions
Basketball team has gotten off to a fast start this season starting 3-0 after
their first three games. They took that 3-0 record on the road for their fourth
straight road game of the season into Mayville, ND to face NAIA opponent Mayville
State University Comets. Mayville entered the game with a 5-1 record on the
season.
The Comets came out fast starting out with a 6 to 0 run over
the Lady Lions in the first 2 minutes of the game. The two teams would battle
back and forth over the next ten minutes and the Lady Lions closed the Comets
lead down to 4 points 14 to 10 with 8 minutes to go in the first half. That’s as
close as the Comets would let it get as they started to pull away from that
point. The Comets strung together a couple nice runs to close out the half. The
first was a 15 to 3 run over a 4 minute stretch to take a 29 to 13 lead over
the Lady Lions with 4:30 left in the half and the second run was a 10 to 6 run
to take a 39 to 19 lead with 1 minute left in the half. The Comets would end up
taking a 42 to 24 advantage into the break over the Lady Lions.
The second half picked up where the first half ended
which saw the Comets full court defensive pressure lead to a 13 to 9 run over
the first 5 minutes. The Comets then went on a 21 to 7 run to put the game out
of reach for the Lady Lions. The Comets went on to win 107 to 60 giving the Lady
Lions their first loss of the season.
In the loss the Lady Lions were led by senior guard Treva
Nutter (Thedford, NE) who led all scorers with 23 points. Treva went 9 of 16
from the field and added 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior guard Shianne
Montgomery (Charlo, MT) was the only other Lady Lion in double figures with 10
points. The Lady Lions had 10 steals in the game to go with 9 offensive boards and
they forced 19 Comet turnovers.
The
loss moves the Lady Lions to 3-1 on the season with 3 more games this week. Thursday,
November 15th at 6pm at home for their first home game of the season
against Dakota State University. Saturday, November 17th at 2pm and Sunday, November 18th
at 4pm both games to be played at North Dakota State College of Sciences in
Wahpeton, ND.
