Lions Get Shut Out on the Road

The Trinity Bible College Lions were looking to build off their 35 t o21 victory over Dakota College Bottineau as they traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on Macalester College. Heading into the game the Lions’ record for the season was 3-4 and Macalester was 3-3.

Macalester College got the ball first and they did not let the opportunity go by as they used 9 plays to go 77 yards in 3:37 to find the endzone first on a 3 yard touchdown pass.  The Lions ran 5 plays netting only 9 yards on their opening possession giving the ball right back to Macalester, who only needed two plays to score again. Macalester scored on a 74 yard touchdown run to cap a 2 play 91 yard drive that took only 42 seconds giving the Scots the early 14 to 0 lead with just over 8 minutes left in the first quarter. The Scots added two more scores in the first quarter, the first on a 5 yard touchdown run and the second on a 95 yard punt return for a touchdown. The Lions trailed 28 to 0 after the first frame.

The Lions defense forced a Scots turnover early in the second quarter; Jerel Richards would intercept the pass and return it 11 yards giving the Lions the ball at their own 33. However, the Lions would give the Scots the ball back after a fumble. Macalester failed to use that as momentum as they went 3 and out on their possession giving the Lions the ball back.  The Lions would then have their next punt blocked by Macalester. The Scots then used 5 plays to go 23 yards for a touchdown on a 12 yard run giving the Scots the 35 to 0 lead with 5 minutes left in the first half. Macalester found the endzone one more time in the second quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run capping a 5 play 56 yard drive. The Scots would lead the Lions 42 to 0 at halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams trading possessions until Macalester College would make a 27 yard field goal pushing their lead to 45 to 0 with just over 3 minutes left in the third quarter. That was the only score for either team in the third quarter. Macalester College added two more fourth quarter touchdowns, one on a 31 yard touchdown run and the last on a 11 yard touchdown run giving Macalester the 59 to 0 win over the Lions.

In the loss the Lions were led in rushing by safety Jason Elliott, who ran 8 times for 89 yards with a long of 51 yards. Johnny Perry added 17 rushes for 86 yards with a long of 22 yards. The leading receiver for the Lions was Devin Christy with 3 catches for 34 yards. The Lions were led on defense by Diego Ramirez with 10 total tackles, while Seth Petersen added 7 tackles, Jacob Rodriguez added 5 and Jason Elliott added 4.

The Lions had the ball for 36 minutes compared to Macalester’s 23. The Lions rushed the ball 58 times for 175 yards and ran a total of 77 plays for 222 yards of total offense. The Lions only had 2 penalties all game.
